ASICS: Farewell 2110, Hello 2130!

I bought my first pair of ASICs when I was running in Vermont. We ran together through the town of Richmond and explored its outskirts. We ran as Summer changed to Fall and eventually Winter. It was cold but my ASIC Gel-1060 never let me down! For those you that know ASICs...you read that right...1060!!! Even after they wore out I kept them because of the memories. They are old, battered, weather beaten and the black rubber heels has come off! Yes I tried to shoe glue the heels back on while vacationing in Florida but it didn't hold with all the walking in Disney World. So I just ripped them off and yeah I walked a little funny in them...but I can't let go because of the memories!

Fast forward to today...I've been in the ASIC-2110 silver and light blue shoe since March 2006. I was loving it until they discontinued them. How much did I love them...here's the picture proof. Yup...that's 4 pairs of the same shoe! And yes Brandon reminds me of the fact that I have 4 of the same make, model and color! Pair #1 got me into serious training. Until then I was happy just running for health and fun. #1 made me into a serious, hold to a schedule runner. #2 got me into my first 1/2 marathon. #3 got me a 20k PR and #4 got me a 5k PR and into training for my first marathon! In case you're wondering....#1 has 349 miles, #2 has 357.2 miles, #3 has 345.3 miles and #4 has 327.1. The first three pairs are in retirement. I usually retire a shoe around 350 miles because I can feel them breaking down at that point. So yes...I have 3 pairs of the same shoe sitting around collecting dust. #4 is the only one still running and will soon be retiring...yes I'm a little bummed about that. Knowing that I only have about 23 miles left on #4 I went shopping last night. Meet the new kids on the block!

Yes they are ASIC but instead of my faithful 2110 series they are the 2130 series. On the left we have 'Midnight' and on the right we have 'Cherry'. And yes....two different colors! No more marking the back with a sharpie so I can tell them apart. This morning I took Midnight for a 5 mile spin on the treadmill. It felt a little weird but after a mile we settled into our rhythm! Tomorrow I'll take #4 out for his last run in Duke Forest. 18 more miles and he can retire with the rest of his buddies. I know it's a well deserved rest for the 2110 gang but I'll miss them on the workout.

By the way...when I walked out of the store carrying two boxes of running shoes I felt like a super star athlete! And why did I buy two pairs? Normally I only need one at a time but there was a sale and if you know anything about running shoes...they are expensive! Why on sale? The newer model - 2140 - comes out next month. Since this morning's run went so well I'll try to stay in 2130 as long as I can. I wonder how many 2130s I'll end up with? Better yet...how long can I hold onto to my 2110 shoes? Yes they aren't doing anything but like the 1060's...they have memories attached to them. Maybe I'll pick one and let the rest go...but which one? I think Brandon will have to step in and help me let go!

Lisa,
I LOVE your photos. I didn't know you had such a "shoe problem". Are you going to hold a memorial for the retired ones. You certainly can't just dispose of them in the garbage!

Ok Julia - I know you have WAY more running shoes than me. Cough up the pic cause I wanna see.

Sherrie - And no I just can't throw them in the garbage...they deserve more. Maybe I should bronze each pair?!

Ok. who doesn't love the ASIC Shoe Saga:) It has charm, struggle, triumph, and farewells... that's heart! Do I need to pay you $10?

Isn't retirement all about less work and more play - i suggest you retire each pair with a good days play!

If you bronze them, they would make great bookends. I know you and Brandon have a couple books.
Or you couple take pictures of them in various places and then make a scrapbook to honor them.

HEY! I am glad you found me. It seems like you are quite the runner yourself; more hard core than I am for sure. I definitely enjoy it. Where in Durham are you moving? We are in Durham 4th ward. Once you move out we will have to go running together. I now go to the temple W/F mornings as that works best since the little man has been around. The night time sessions don't work at the present.
